MARPLE Golf Club were once more exemplary hosts for the second playing of the Golfers Local Manchester Trophy finals for men’s singles and ladies pairs.

Battling through the ko rounds were 21 men and eight ladies pairs with last year’s winners Pam Wiseley and Sheila McDonald part of a quality field.
 
Also last year’s men’s singles victory Terry Gills (Styal) was also looking to do a double and win another great golfing break with Northumberland Golf Tours (www.northumberlandgolftours.com)

As usual the day provided a fascinating contest with both competitions going to the wire.

The weather relented after a damp start but it soon cleared up with strong winds making the course even more challenging.
 
In the men’s singles it needed a cpo on 36 points to give a delighted Simon Brown of Pike Fold the trip to the North East where he and his chosen partner will enjoy the superb golf on offer in Northumberland and the Golfers Local Trophy as his better back nine eased out Hart Common’s Dave Smith who had the ample consolation of a round for four at De Vere Mottram Hall.

Denton’s Dave Fricker was next in with 35 points to win a round for four at Marriott Breadsall Priory with the last two prizes decided by a count-back on 34 points between two stars from Blackley Golf Club.

Darren Booth got the nod ahead of Gary Conroy to win a round for four at Barcelo Shrigley Hall.
 

Nearest the pin prizes went to Dave Fricker and Dave Booth (Northenden) with Fricker also winning 24 balls for the only Two of the day.

There was only a point between the top three ladies pairs and for the first time in many years of WGTB finals it was a home pair that came out on top.

Marple’s Barbara McDowell and Louise Moore posted 41 points to win a golfing break at De Vere Oulton Hall and the Golfers Local Trophies.

Heaton Moor’s Gillian Fricker and Julie Marshall were next in after winning a cpo on 40 points and they too won a terrific prize of beauty treatment at the state-of-the-art new Spa at The Mere Club.

They just edged out Viv Carroll and June Dawson of Hazel Grove who won a round for four at Mottram Hall and Pam Wiseley and Sheila McDonald were next in with 38 points to win a round for four at Marple.

Completing the prize list were Oldham stalwarts Mary Buckley and Edythe Turner.

Nearest the pin prizes of golf shirts from Lady on the Green were Gillian Fricker and Viv Carroll.

After the golf the players enjoyed the company of Marple Captain George Jones and excellent refreshments to take part in the presentation ceremony.
