Oldham Duo Beat The Showers To Win Top Trip WITHINGTON Golf Club provided a great venue and a testing course to provided another thrilling finish in the annual Cardrona Ladies Pairs Classic. Despite a dire weather forecast which resulted in some heavy showers and the occasional rumble of thunder the players stuck to their task to enjoy the day. Barbara Granger (Withington) and former Withington (now Warrington) player Marie Stacey set a strong early pace as they posted an impressive 42 points to set a daunting target for the rest of the field. |

It was eventually equalled later in the
day by WGTB regulars Bev Scholes and Jane Antrobus who both play at Oldham
and Rochdale and their better back nine secured them the top prize of a trip
to the fabulous Macdonalds Cardrona Hotel and Golf resort near Peebles. Jane also won the prize for nearest the pin in two on the 285-yard 15th hole putting her second shot to within a few inches from the hole to set up a vital birdie three. For the runners-up there was the ample consolation of a voucher to purchase goods at Golfino in Knutsford. The sting in the tail came from Didsbury’s Jenny White and her partner Helen Ambrose with 41 points to win a round for four at Marriott Worlsey Park. In fourth place with 39 points were Saddleworth’s Julie Ward and Hazel Rogerson who won a round for four at Barcelo Shrigley Hall with Snooper guests Sue Allen and Renate Danziel picking up bags and golf gift sets as they won a cpo on 38 points from Liz Hinchliffe and Ann Head of Saddleworth and Davenport’s Jayne Roberts and Sandra Turner. The nearest the pin on the fourth hole went to Kath Hernon of Northenden with three ‘Two’s’ each earning eight balls for Jayne Roberts (Davenport) Karen Goodall and Lilian Syme. |
