Stamford claim Trophy for the first time |

STAMFORD Golf Club
put their names on the WGTB Club Trophy for the first time in the 20 years
that the competition has been running. Reddish Vale hosted the final for the third time in its long history and all competitors voted the course to be in great condition and a fitting and challenging final venue. The club were also superb in their support of the final in every way both on and off the course with some top-class catering to end a memorable day.

The 16 pairs who
reached the final had come from an original entry of well over 250 players
from the 14 invited clubs and battled through three rounds of match-play to
compete for a superb array of prizes. And the deserving winners with a fine haul of 43 betterball Stableford points were Kevin Mayers and Lee Gladrey of Stamford. |

They will be able
to enjoy two magnificent golfing breaks at the Domaine de la Valdaine Hotel
and Golf Resort in the Rhone Valley in France as well as a golf break at a
QHotels golf venue of their choice and they also take the WGTB Trophy back
to be displayed in their own club’s trophy cabinet. Next in 41 points were Sale vice Captain Andy McLaren, a real WGTB Trophy stalwart, and his partner Steve Carr. They will be able to enjoy a stay at the scenic Woll Golf Club in the Scottish Borders.

Jimmy
Shufflebotham and Mark McLoughlin of Chorlton were the early leaders with 40
points but eventually ended up fourth and won another great prize of a round
of golf for four at De Vere Wychwood Park. Father and son combination Ian and Dave Fairfax of Denton were fifth with 38 points and received a round for four at Northenden plus two National County cards. Completing the ‘major’ prizes were Didsbury duo Andy Lawman and Neil Higgins on 37 points to win shirts. Local knowledge came into play on the nearest the pin prizes as they went to Reddish Vale’s Lee Costello and Paul Bruckshaw on the sixth and 16th holes. Finally there were four twos and Lee Costelo, Neil Higgins, John Aikenhead (Didsbury) and Ian Fairfax each received eight balls. |
