WGTB Club Trophy 2007 Final

Vale Duo Regain WGTB Trophy

REDDISH Vale Golf Club’s dynamic duo of Paul Wheelton and Colin Barr booked a dream trip to Spain in a dramatic finish to the WGTB Club Trophy at Chorlton.

They became only the second pair to win the competition twice in the last 18 years after winning the then Cyplon Trophy in 2005.

Coming in the penultimate group they posted a winning 43 points to pip playing partners Mike Burke and Mike Elliott by a single point to win a trip to Polaris World in Spain courtesy of main sponsors Nuttalls Travel of Cheadle.

They were presented with their trophy by Nuttalls representative Bryce Cooper and will be able to enjoy a VIP trip including flights, golf and accommodation over the next few months.

Colin Barr, who also received a pair of binoculars for getting a hole-in-one at Fairfield in a match-play round of the competition, said: "It was a great competition and a terrific final in which we were pushed all the way by the two Mikes.

"The Chorlton course was in great condition and once more the tournament which has involved nearly 1,000 players from the 14 invited clubs was superbly organised by WGTB Golf and began for us last Autumn with our club qualifying competition.

"We got off to a great start with three pars and back-to-back birdies on the fifth and sixth holes gave a great foundation to build on and we were encouraged all the way by our playing partners who were excellent company and but for a blob on the fourth hole could well have beaten us.

"The icing on the cake came on the last hole when six-handicapper Paul got a birdie which was needed as our opponents would have finished level and won with a better back nine score."

For the colourful Withington pair there was another excellent prize to enjoy with a weekend break at the scenic Woll Golf Club in the Scottish borders.

Third place went to another Reddish Vale pair in Andy Sever and Garry May who will enjoy two rounds of golf and an overnight stay at Shrigley Hall Hotel and Golf Club as their superb back nine of 24 points gave them the edge in a three-way play-off on 41 points.

Dave Gregory and Dan Higgins of Denton won a round for four at Northenden Golf Club and Dave also received a pair of binoculars for another ’ace’ at Fairfield in the match-play rounds.

Bryce Cooper also supplied four Polaris umbrellas for a raffle for the competitors so that there were few who went home empty-handed.

All competitors enjoyed a great final day, which was superbly hosted by Chorlton in providing a course in splendid condition and first-class hospitality in the clubhouse with a warm welcome from Chorlton Captain Peter McManus and President Ray Higham and the many members who were there on the day, which was blessed by fantastic weather.
