Who’d be a Captain? |
|
|
ALTHOUGH being appointed as the Captain
of a golf club is usually considered to be the top honour a member can
achieve it can bring some unusual situations for the bearer of the top
office. Styal Captain Ned Spencer has put himself into some strenuous and strange situations in order to raise money for his chosen charity of Francis House during his year in office. He took part in the Wilmslow Half Marathon and engendered great support from members and friends by raising over £2,500 to get his year off to a great start. He has also taken part in several Captain and Pro Challenge matches against members to raise more money but Ned really put himself to the test on his captain’s Family Fun Day at the club. |

Club members took part in a golf
competition in which there was a VW car on offer from Smith Knight Fay for
anyone achieving a hole-in-one on the club’s par three tenth hole – no-one
managed it but it did prove to be a good money spinner. The real fun began in the afternoon with Ned helping to sell hard at a range of stalls and activities including a balloon race, beat the goalie, raffles and tombola, a cuddly toy stall, a bouncy castle and a putting competition. |

But the ‘highlight’ for Ned and members
was the traditional ‘Splat the Captain’ session where Ned was secured in
stocks and soaked to the skin with a barrage of wet sponges from his family
and ‘friends’. After a quick change it was time to launch the eco-friendly balloons before drawing the carious raffles to help raise another substantial amount towards Ned’s chosen charity. Ned said: "It was a great day despite some depressing weather but all who attended enjoyed the fun and contributed generously to a very deserving cause. |
