A Walk in the Park

How often do we look to our own doorstep for golf break of quality which is what you will get if you

treat yourself to a visit to Marriott Worsley Park Hotel & Country Club, formerly home to the Duke of Bridgewater, situated just minutes from Junction 13 off the M60 so easily accessible and yet in such a peaceful and restful setting.

As ever my visit was golf connected to assist in a corporate event with a stay-over and through this I was to find out just how obliging the staff in each area of the hotel were to make sure I received all the assistance required to make it a memorable occasion.

The hotel was very busy with people with varied needs including use of the excellent leisure facilities, use of the hotel as a base to visit many of the local places of interest and local activities or just to chill out in surroundings which offer the ultimate in relaxation – ideal to people watch!

As many of you will know Marriott pride themselves in their connection to golf with every venue having a least one championship course, and 5 offer up to 36 holes of superb golf for players of every skill level. You can now visit them in Germany, Spain and Portugal.

Most of them have played host to many high profile events on the golf calendar with Worsley Marriott being no exception having hosted the European Challenge Tour, the Professional Footballer’s Association Golf Classic and the JJB North West Challenge to name but a few. Also it is a popular venue for visiting football teams from abroad who love to use it as a base when visiting to play the Manchester or Liverpool teams as it offers excellent facilities and privacy. In fact if you are a sports enthusiast you may enjoy looking at the ‘Wall of Fame’ just left of reception where you will see many signed sports shirts by famous teams and individuals.

Worsley Marriott has had water retention problems in the past but after spending huge amounts of money on the course I can honestly say that when I played it in June I have never seen it in such superb condition. However I was reminded that whatever the level of golf you still need your wits about you to skirt around or over the numerous obstacles and water features which demand an accurate game, which I was to find at my cost!

Designed by Ross McMurran and Michael King of European Golf Design , this 6611yards, par 71 course meets the highest standards with greens and tees all laid out to USGA specifications. It has also used the full potential of the natural terrain. The 7th hole offers a challenging and beautiful Par 3 which requires precision and accuracy. An inspiring hole to play which is surrounded by water hazards and the backdrop to the green is an idyllic woodland area. Making par here would satisfy any standard of golfer.

If for any reason you are feeling less energetic this golf resort has a good supply of golf carts for hire and an excellent, well stocked golf shop should you wish to treat yourself or your partner.

Before or after your round, given the time, you can always polish your swing in the short and long game practice areas or refine your drive on the 250m practice range. Alternativley if you feel it necessary why not book a golf lesson or two while you are feeling sufficiently relaxed to take in the excellent advice on offer from David Screeton, who Worsley are fortunate to have as their golf professional, and who is universally respected throughout the game.

While you enjoy your ‘Golf Escape’ should your partner be a non-golfer then he/she may be enjoy a soak in the spa included in what is termed a ‘Pamper Escape’ which includes an indoor heated swimming pool, sauna, steam room, spa bath, resistance gym, aerobics studio and cardiovascular suite.

For those of you who live more out of the area then on a free day there is much to visit eg:

The Lowry Centre, The Trafford Centre, Tatton Park, Imperial War Museum, Historic Chester being just a few suggestions.

Obviously with any break the dining facilities are important and you will not be disappointed with the choice on offer at this venue. Depending whether you prefer to dress up or down you have a choice of the award winning fine dining experience of the Brindley’s Restaurant after an aperitif in the Chimney bar or try the more relaxed atmosphere of the Terrace Brasserie or take a snack/drink in the Sports Bar each with its own atmosphere.

Having been given a personal tour of a number of guests rooms I was very impressed by the standard and warmth they offered to the weary golfer!
