DISTANCE IS EVERYTHING AT MOTTRAM HALL |
|
|
De Vere Mottram Hall, Host to the PGA Manchester Open
2002-2006, have always been at the cutting edge of new golf technology and
were one of the first clubs in the North of England to introduce sat nav
technology to their fleet of buggies a couple of years ago. Now golfers playing the Mottram course have the newest aid to golfing pleasure with the ‘Caddy’ device enabling golfers to see at a glance the distance required for their round of golf. It is believed that Mottram Hall is the first course in the North West to have the ‘Caddy’ facility available for members and visitors Looking like a mobile phone the ‘Caddy’ can simply be connected to a golfer’s bag or around their waist and is permitted by the R & A under local rules. It can be programmed either at the course you are playing or by downloading from over 1000UK courses from the website www.caddy.co.uk . |

Mottram professional Matthew Turnock said "The ‘Caddy’ will
automatically provide you with the distances you need on each and every hole and at all times throughout a hole it will display the distance to the front of the green even if you are on an adjoining fairway or through the green. "You will also know how far it is to, or to carry three primary hazards on each hole such as bunkers, water, dog legs, hollows, paths. "As the hazards become out of play the large element of the display, visible from over 20 feet away, will automatically change to show the distance to the front, centre and back of the green. |

"There are also simple owner preferences such as male or
female, which is important for information such as stroke index and par,
yards or metres." Certainly simplicity is the key to ‘Caddy’ and on using it around Mottram Hall I found it to be easy to use, very accurate and comfortable to carry and view. It removes the need for looking for marker posts and discs on the course and pacing yardages from various points as all the information is literally at your finger tips, saving time and removing many queries. It was good to be back at Mottram Hall where I always think everything has been thought of to make the transition from car park to golf course so smooth that when I stand on the first tee I think "how did that happen"? The 18-hole, par 72, championship course itself does not change, the first nine holes being parkland and the back nine in more demanding woodland, representing a challenge for all standards of golfer. Designed by Dave Thomas, famous for also designed the famous Brabazon at The Belfry, the course is fairly resistant to the weather is usually open all year round. You will also find a chipping area, putting green, driving range and buggies, along with three resident professionals should you wish to sharpen up your game – a true golfer’s paradise. The course record – The best/lowest eve score at Mottram Hall was achieved by golf professional David Shacklady in 2002. He played the 18 holes in a nine under par score of 63. |

The leisure club, which offers health and beauty treatments
as well as the usual pool, jacuzzi, sauna etc is popular with all who stay
there. 4-star Mottram Hall itself is an elegant 18th Century Georgian House set in 270 acres of beautiful, secluded countryside with its own formal gardens, lake and parkland. Built in 1721 by Nathaniel Booth this Grade 11 listed building used to be moated and had stunning landscaping, trees and lake most of which is still in existence. The decorative work in the hall was created by the famous architects the Adam Brothers during the 18th century. In 1939 it was sold to a local electrical firm Ferguson Pailin (now GEC) and was used as a retreat for its workers, who could go for 15 shillings for the weekend. It was also extended at this time and was used as a conference centre. I understand that during the 2nd war and in the following years the hall had its own farm for fresh milk and eggs and grew everything they needed. By 1971 the hall was converted into a Hotel and Country Club and the De Vere ownership in approximately 1980. Should you decide to stay in one of the 131 bedrooms ranging from suites overlooking the lake, four posters and standard doubles or twins then having checked in the next decision is where and what to eat? |
