Young turns up heat at Caldy

MARK Young won the Caldy Quart for the second year running by the emphatic margin of 11 shots.

And he moved to within 85 points of regaining the top spot in the Mitsushiba Northern Order of Merit which he dominated last season.

The Lancashire County player from Longridge led the way at the half-way stage after a 68 but then put himself out of reach of the rest of the field with a flawless eight-under-par 64 which he described as the best round of his life.

And he attributed it to Paul Gavaghan, an assistant at his club who recently gave him a couple of lessons.

“I’d not been playing well for a few weeks and he sorted me out,” said Young, who finished his second round in style with an eagle, reaching the 503-yard hole with a driver and five iron.

“I was pumped up by that stage,” he said after missing the course record by a shot. “I reached all four of the par fives in two in both rounds and the putter did the rest. I felt I could not miss.”

Young, who also won the Henriques Trophy at Hesketh in May, is lying second in the merit behind long time leader Sam Stuart, his county team-mate from St Annes Old Links and Chorley.

Prestatyn’s John Singleton claimed second place with 72 and 71 and by a stroke from Bromborough’s Alex Evans.
