Martin’s Back To His Cheshire Roots

DELAMERE Forest’s new professional Martin Brown is enjoying life at the prestigious Cheshire club with his return to his native Cheshire.

Martin was a junior at Alsager Golf Club before turning professional at the tender age of 16 and he then worked for four years at Malkins Bank under David Wheeler while gaining his PGA qualification.

He furthered his experience with 18 months at Astbury before making the big move to the wonderful Royal Jersey Golf Club where he worked for eight years alongside seniors’ legend Tommy Horton who has been a significant influence in Martin’s development since then.

Martin left Royal Jersey in 1999 and then spent a short period near Edinburgh before his appointment to be the professional at the high profile Fulford Golf Club, York.

For many years Fulford staged the top-ranking Benson and Hedges Tournament, which was made even more famous by the Bernhard Langer shot from a tree on the 17th green.

Martin said: “My travels away from Cheshire have given me a great variety of golfing experiences and Fulford was undoubtedly one of the top jobs in the country.

“But when I heard that the Delamere Forest professional’s job was available I could not resist the chance of a return to my Cheshire roots.

“I consulted Tommy Horton and he had no hesitation in advising me to go for it and I took over in April.

“Since then the club have been superb in building a magnificent new professional’s facility on the side of the clubhouse.

“It has a spacious retail area and on the first floor there was a large room I have been able to develop as a video teaching and custom-fitting state of the art facility.

“I have the Vector Pro Launch system, which very few club professionals have available to them on site.

 “The facility has been very busy since it opened and I am also looking to develop an instruction library.

“Delamere Forest is a unique club with a relatively small membership but I have great support from the members with lots of teaching, custom fitting guidance and good retail sales.

“I have Steven Parr, from Widnes as my assistant professional and he will be doing his PGA finals next year and he too is fully enjoying the ‘Delamere’ experience.
