Wilpshire Trophy Wilpshire GC  -  Three is Robbo’s lucky number

ENGLAND Under-21 player James Robinson won his third Mitsushiba Northern Order of Merit event of the season with a stunning finish to his second round in the Wilpshire Trophy.

The 19-year-old from Southport and Ainsdale racked up a quartet of threes, two of them birdies, in a 64 to deny Oldham veteran Alan Squires by a shot.

It was over the same holes that Robinson, winner of the Formby Hare and Hillside Pines Trophy at the start of the campaign, dropped three strokes in his first round 74 as Lancashire and England senior player Squires led with a 66.

Robinson collected eight threes all told in the afternoon to post a four-under-par total and move to within 145 points of St Annes Old Links and Chorley player Sam Stuart in the merit.

Gary Wolstenholme, beaten in the second round of the English Amateur Championship earlier in the week, carded a second round 65 but the Carus Green man pulled up four shots behind Robinson as he claimed fifth prize.
