West Lancs GC Crosby Plate

Carroll’s close encounter

JOHN Carroll fired another “come and get me” message to the England selectors when he won the Crosby Plate for the second year in a row at West Lancs – but he cut it fine.

The Huyton and Prescot player bogeyed the final hole to tie on three-over-par aggregate with Clitheroe’s Andy Heesom after both had posted 73 and 74.

But Carroll, 24,  got the verdict on a card play-off to move into second place in the Mitsushiba Northern Order of Merit, 200 points behind his Lancashire team-mate Sam Stuart, from St Annes Old Links and Chorley.

Despite his impressive form, and a plus four handicap, the 2006 county champion who won the Southport and Ainsdale Bowl at the start of the season has still not been considered by his country.
