Last Gasp Withington Deny Sale Hat-Trick

SALE ladies looked on course for a Mersey Shield hat-trick as they led host club Withington by a point with the last pairs out on the course.

But Lynn Ingham and Carol Southern proved to be the heroines for Withington as they posted a useful 34 points to increase their team total by two and take over at the top from Sale to win the Shield for the first time since 2003, when they were again the hosts for the competition.

A day-long competition featuring over 100 pairs from the five Mersey clubs saw the lead change hands several times with the top six scores counting for each team in the 49th year of the competition and players enjoyed superb weather and a course in tip-top condition.

The top individual score of 40 points came from Withington’s Carly McLachlan and Claire Ebrey who edged out Northenden’s Pat McKenzie and Pauline Branagh by a point with the other top spots going to Soonja Kim and Janice Weyer (Sale) 38 and Lin Poole and Ros Chapman (Didsbury 37)

The other Withington team counters were Janet Holmes and Pauline Shott 36, Moira Levey and Liz Bradbury 36, Julie Webb and Brenda Dagnall 34 and Helen Kirkpatrick and Karen Davies 33.

Final Team Scores: 1 Withington 213, 2 Sale 212, 3 Didsbury 209, 4 Chorlton 201, 5 Northenden 198.
