Manchester & District Lady Golfers Association

A Great Honour For Margery

Margery Gardiner  is delighted and honoured to be the President of the prestigious Manchester and District Ladies Golf Association for 2013.

Margery is a farmer’s daughter who married into a golfing family and joined Greenmount Golf Club in 1985 after the birth of her third child and has enjoyed a great involvement with the game since then.

Margery said: "I enjoyed the game much more than I expected and soon became involved in the ladies section of the club.

"I served in a variety of roles including Lady Captain in 1993 and Lady President in 2010-2011 and as a consequence of changes brought on by equality legislation I was voted on to the club council for three years and I know that the club will give me full support in my MDLGA role in 2013.

MDLGA President 2013

"I am only an average golfer but enjoy playing competitive golf and open competitions on a variety of courses and over the years have won various trophies and prizes but my greatest achievement was to win the MDLGA Challenge Bowl in 2010.

"I first served on the MDLGA committee for one year in 2005 and then I was asked to be the treasurer, a post I held until 2012 and then received the ultimate accolade of being asked to be the President.

"The MDLGA is the biggest organisation of its kind for ladies in England with the best part of 90 clubs being involved in a range of competitions each year and has been in operation for well over 100 years.

"Everyone thinks of the Bell Cup when you mention MDLGA but we organise various competitions throughout the year and have several beautiful trophies.

"My aim this year is to promote all of our events and at the AGM I had all of the trophies on display and gave a brief history of them all.

"The oldest trophy is the beautiful Challenge Bowl dating back to 1902 and a newspaper cutting of the first competition stated that it was played in ‘drenching rain, wind and hail’ – not much has changed in 110 years!

"Having been involved with the committee for seven years I know what a hardworking group they are but also fun-loving and friendly and I know that I can rely on their support and expertise."

MDLGA dates for 2013: May 31 Team event for four players at Blackburn; June 7 Bunty Booth Final at Sale; July 5 Challenge Bowl and Lloyd Jones Scratch Trophy at Northenden; August 9 Team event for Three players at Hindley Hall; September 6 Bell Cup finals Day at Greenmount; September 9 Greensome at Ringway.
