New first for Northenden NORTHENDEN Golf Club’s long-serving member Jean Leveson has become the first member of her club to become the President of the Manchester and District Ladies Golf Association which has nearly 100 clubs within a 25-mile radius of the centre of Manchester and thousands of lady members. The MDLGA is now into its 110th year and goes from strength to strength with its top event being the Team Knock Out for the coveted Bell Cup, currently held by Warrington GC. Jean joined Northenden in 1970 with a handicap of 21 having previously played at Cheadle for eight years. She brings a wealth of experience to her new role having served on her club committee in various capacities including five years as ladies secretary. |

Jean was Lady Captain in 1993 and played
in East Cheshire League Shield matches for almost 30 years and she was also the
club delegate to Cheshire for three years from 2006-9. Jean said: "I managed to play off 14 handicap during my best years and had many playing successes including winning Mr Captain’s Prize and the Jubilee Cup. "My greatest success was the qualify for the Dunhill Amateur competition from Northenden and go through to the area and regional final at St Annes Old Links and winning that to go on to the national final at Woburn where I finished seventh. "I have also been successful in mixed competitions and opens playing with my husband Charles. "I served on the MDLGA committee for three years from 1998-2001 and attended the Centenary lunch in 2002. "I never imagined that I would be invited to be President of the MDLGA and I consider it a great honour both for myself and the club since I am the first lady from Northenden to hold this position. "Northenden will also host the Bell Cup finals day in September which is a terrific first for the club. "MDLGA has a terrific committee, led by secretary Janet Collins of Rochdale GC, and they fully support ladies golf – particularly junior golf within Lancashire, Cheshire and Derbyshire and I am really looking forward to the coming year." MDLGA events in 2012: - Bunty Booth final at Leigh GC on June 1, Challenge Cup and Lloyd Jones Trophy at Saddleworth GC on July 6, Team event at Prestbury GC on August 10, Bell Cup final at Northenden on September 10, Greensome competition at Balckburn on September 14.
