Manchester Alliance Matchplay Finals 2011 |

Tim Makes It Three FORMER Mottram Hall teaching professional Tim Maxwell (Knutsford) completed his third win in the prestigious Alliance match-play finals as he snatched victory from the jaws of defeat at the traditional venue of Flixton Golf Club. Perfect weather and playing conditions produced some excellent golf in both the main event and the assistant professional’s finals. The morning semi-finals saw Maxwell prevail by 2/1 over Kris Andrews (Ashton-on-Mersey) to meet another former winner in Styal’s Jon Cheetham who cruised to a 5/3 win over Pike Fold’s Grant Hamerton. |

Some wayward driving from Maxwell gave
Cheetham the edge as he led all the way being two up with three to play
before Tim pulled a hole back. Cheetham, who won the trophy in 1998, put his drive out of bounds on the 18th and a steady par from Maxwell took the match down the 19th hole and he again parred the hole to retain the trophy he won last year and also in 2004. |

The assistant’s final was another class
encounter between Europro players Scott Jackson (Disley) and Martyn Hamer
(Ellesmere). The morning semis had seen Hamer beat Cheadle youngster Chris Fawcett 7/6 and Jackson was equally emphatic in cruising to a 5-3 win over Marland’s Andrew Terry. There was never more than hole in it all the way to the 18th with Jackson enjoying a one hole lead and he held on to win as both players scored par five’s on the last hole. |
