IN freezing and extremely windy
conditions Manchester Golf Club’s, Rachel Connor won the Ladies Order of
Merit title for the Formby Leveret at Formby Ladies Golf Club.
The field for the Leveret was filled by players with both County and National experience. The event was played over 36 holes and despite trailing the first round leader Katie Best (Sherwood Forest) by two shots, Rachel held her composure in very testing conditions to take the title by a shot from fellow girl international Hannah Barwood (Knowle Golf Club). Rachel’s next event takes her to Royal Troon where she will take on the cream of Europe in the Helen Holm Scottish Strokeplay. This will be the first event in ‘Rachel’s Rainbow Challenge’ when Rachel’s scores of birdie or better will be tallied to raise much needed funds for the Francis House Children’s Hospice in Didsbury, Manchester. |

Lancashire Star’s Rainbow Challenge In 2008 England girl international Rachel Connor the daughter of Manchester Golf Club’s Professional, Brian Connor has decided to use her golf skills to help those youngsters who are less fortunate than herself. The Rainbow Family Trust is a charity set up to care for children with a short life expectancy. The Trust’s home is at Francis House, a children’s hospice which is located in Didsbury, Manchester. Francis House gives the children a loving home from home and offers the families of very sick children a respite from their role as carers. In order to help the Rainbow Family Trust, Rachel is hoping that Golfers across the UK will sponsor her during the 2008 season. Rachel has selected 4 major tournaments this year April The Scottish Strokeplay – Troon (72 Holes) May The Welsh Strokeplay – Pyle & Kenfig (54 Holes) July The English Strokeplay – The Berkshire (72 holes) August The British Strokeplay - Malone, Belfast (72 Holes) During these tournaments Rachel will keep a record of the number of birdies, eagles or better that she has and at the end of the year sponsors can donate according to the number that she achieves. Details of the tally of birdies will be posted in a weekly newsletter that will be sent out to sponsors by email. Rachel said: "I’ve been hoping to do something for a children’s charity for a while now. I think that this will be a good way to help out local children that are really having a hard time. Plus I’ll be motivated to clock up the birdies this year knowing that each one will be helping the Rainbow Family Trust." Rachel will be looking to push on with her career this season as she has enjoyed winter training and playing in Florida with a good measure of success. This was followed by training with England Girls at La Cala in Spain and then playing in the Spanish Amateur Championships where she enjoyed reaching the quarter finals of the match-play after qualifying from the strokeplay rounds |
