THE eighth playing of the GMWN Trophy final saw 36 competitors given a stern examination of their golfing game by a challenging Marple golf course.

Hosting the final for the second year the club pulled out all the stops both on and off the course to give all the finalists a real day to remember.

The slick Marple greens had some fiendish pin placements and with a strong wind to contend with accuracy and course management were key to good scoring.

And while many players struggled to accumulate points the winners were fully deserving of being able to lift the superb trophies provided by Ryan PGT and plan a fantastic golfing break to South West Ireland with Peter Walsh of Fairway Holidays who provided the top prizes.

In the men’s singles Manchester’s five-handicapper James Clegg posted 34 points, which led for most of the round until late starters Andy Sever (Reddish Vale) and Alan Hood (Stamford) eventually overtook him.

Andy returned the same score of 34 points as James but a better back nine of 16 points gave him the runners-up spot and a fine prize of a round for four at Mere Golf and Country Club plus breakfast.

James had ample consolation by winning a voucher from Made2Measure Golf.

But it was Stamford’s 20-handicapper Alan Hood who took the top spot with 36 points giving him his finest-ever win in golf.

Alan paid tribute to Brookdale’s Craig Dinsdale who had marked his card- ironically after Craig had done the same for last year’s winner Terry Gills of Styal.

Next in was Colin Hughes of Mellor and Townscliffe who won a round of four at Styal Golf Club with 33 points and winning a golf shirt for his 31 points was fifth-placed Richard Barraclough of Bramall Park.

The ladies competition was dominated by a superb winning score of 42 points from Oldham Golf Club’s dynamic duo of Sue Mangov-Jones and Julie Connolly.

A terrific back nine of 23 points saw them overtake playing partners Brenda Chadwick and Val O’Brien of Didsbury who finished as runners-up with 36 points after an excellent start which saw them notch three birdies in the first six holes.

Taking third place were Julia Dunne and Gill Usher of Macclesfield Golf Club with 35 points.

In a cpo on 34 Brookdale Lady Captain Diane Williams and Lady Vice Captain Margaret Coleman edged out Stockport’s Lynne Leutton and Gill Hudson.

Nearest the pin prizes were won by Brenda Chadwick, Jill Hunter-Blench (Macclesfield), Vin Kenny (Saddleworth) and Brian Beswick (Disley).

There were four ‘Twos’ and winning seven balls each were Brenda Chadwick (Didsbury), Garry Bingham (Disley), Joyce Ryder (Swinton Park) and guest Denis Martin – the Marple President.

All prize winners paid tribute to the Marple club for the quality of the course, the excellent presentation buffet and the warm welcome they were afforded.

Also receiving fulsome praise were competition organisers WGTB Golf and Greater Manchester Weekly Newspapers for their great support of the event.

There were record entries for the competition from over 70 clubs and all competitors vowed to be back next year when the competition will extend to golf clubs in the Trafford area.
