Letting Nature Take Its Course

Eleven years later and a return invite to the 4* Forest Pines, near Brigg and was I in for a surprise. I remember my first visit quite clearly and how impressed I was with the golf course and the warmth of the hotel and was more than happy to recommend it to my many golf friends.

However nothing stands still very long these days and Forest Pines (now owned by Q Hotels) is no exception for this venue has really moved into the 21st century, following a huge £10 million makeover. This includes the refurbishment of the Leisure and Spa facilities and the recently opened new seafood restaurant Eighteen57 plus the new bar and lounge area. This along with The Grill and the clubhouse Pines Bar with spectacular woodland views now offers something for everyone. There are 188 luxuriously appointed bedrooms to choose from, all offering Sky TV and 24 hour room service so

whether you are looking to enjoy a relaxed informal occasion with the family or friends, or celebrating with work colleagues, then look no further, this could be the place for you and only 90 minutes from Manchester in a convenient location close to J4 of the M180.

I of course was taking a golf break and the friendliness that greeted me on my arrival, continued throughout the hotel to the minute I left, nothing was too much trouble for the staff to make sure that my visit was memorable. On my first afternoon I walked the course and remembered what it was that drew me back to what is now known as Lincolnshire’s Premier Golf Course, set around the rolling north Lincolnshire Wolds. Having just returned from a holiday in Las Vegas I was very happy to be back with nature and interested to learn of the commitment being made to the environment especially to the 180 acres of woodland where I was informed there are 90 species of plants and trees, 15 types of invertebrates from dragonflies to butterflies, grey squirrels and brown hares, over 25 bird varieties, grasslands, woodlands and water features. In all Forest Pines have 17 green-keepers who take great pride in their work.

The head green-keeper informed me that the course was designed and built in 1996 by the late John Morgan, the PGA Senior Tour Player. The 27-holes cover over 10,000 yards and are sand based so drain well in winter which is a bonus when they have visitors all year round (of course the endless wet weather we had last year affected everyone). They store 31 buggies and 4 power caddies for hire, although as the land is relatively flat it is nice to walk and get some healthy exercise in such a beautiful setting.

The course is made up of three separate loops of nine being The Forest, The Pines and The Beeches which can be interchange to create different golfing experiences, all incorporating lush fairways and excellent undulating greens with strategically placed water hazards. Like most golf venues various golf packages are offered including ‘The Sunday Driver’ always popular with golfers.

The only criticism is the lack of good practice facilities however this I did mention and understand that Q Hotels are looking into the matter.

As my visit only lasted two days I did not have time to the visit the immediate area but I did find out from reception that within easy reach there are plenty of attractions to visit including the city of Lincoln where you can visit Lincoln Castle which has an interesting history. There are also around half dozen other golf courses within easy travelling distance should you feel the need to play other courses, but why do this when you have all you need to hand without getting in your car!
