Fairway Pairs Knock Out

Stars Come Out At Romiley

ROMILEY Golf Club have been superb hosts for the Fairway Men’s Pairs Algarve Classic for many years.

But this year was certainly the finest ever for the condition and presentation of their scenic and testing course with off course hospitality, organisation and service second to none.

The 16 pairs who had battled through the ko rounds to make the final certainly appreciated it all and they produced another enthralling, enjoyable and tense final with magnificent prizes on offer.

Charles Beadle & Timy Gregory Receive The Prize
From Sponsor Peter Walsh of Fairway Holidays
In the end it was the class of WGTB regulars Tony Gregory (Stockport) and Charles Beadle (Bramhall) that paid off as they posted a fine winning score of 43 points.

And they were delighted to go away with the fantastic prize of a golfing holiday in The Algarve as their reward.

There was a superb battle for the other four main prizes with four pairs locked on 41 points, three of them with a back nine of 20 points.

But once the calculations had been done it was former winners John Andrews and Ashley Birchall of Bramall Park who got the nod for the second prize of a golfing break at De Vere Mottram Hall.

The perpetual class of the oldest finalists Gilbert Pierce and Paul Williams of Hindley Hall provided one of the days many highlights as they finished third to each win top of the range DCF binoculars supplied by leading UK manufacturer Optical Hardware.

With Paul being a keen ornithologist this was an ideal prize.

Gilbert, now into his eighties and still playing off a useful 14 handicap also won the nearest the pin prize on the par three second where his Two saw him share 24 balls with Paul Dransfield of Dukinfield

The quality golf of Gilbert and Paul gave a great message to all of the younger competitors in the field.

In fourth place were Steve Rayer (Tytherington) and Ken Ashford (Woodside) who will enjoy breakfast and a round for four at the great venue of The Mere.

Finally Brian Power (North Manchester) and Mike Shaw (Swinton Park) won a round for four at Chorlton GC.

Dave Smith of Hart Common, was nearest the pin in two on the 18th and lone player Philip Forshaw received a reward for his gallant efforts in playing on his own.
