THE culmination of hundreds of inter club matches in the East Cheshire Ladies Leagues was reached at Mellor and Townscliffe, the home club of the League President Norma Knape. The teams in the finals had come through as winners of their groups and then through knock-out rounds to make the big day. M and T were able to present a challenging course in pristine condition for the three finals and the competitors enjoyed the golf and the hospitality as they endured four seasons of weather in one day. The Business Ladies League had been decided at the same course a week prior to the finals day and Didsbury’s ladies put their name on the trophy for the first time as their trio of Carol Dalby, Caroline Perry and Claire Murray beat Warrington 2-1. The first match out on the main finals day saw Tytherington looking to defend their trophy against a strong Sandiway team. |

Sandiway’s young Cheshire guns Steph Farrar and Kate Whitmore gave Sandiway an early 2-0 lead and Alison Hunt made it 3-0. But Tytherington responded well as Sally Hebden and Kim Jackson reduced the arrears only for Denis Burchell and Sue Wilson clinched victory with two emphatic wins to take the trophy back to Sandiway for the sixth time. The win sees Sandiway take on Runcorn – the West Cheshire champions at Crewe for the overall Cheshire title.
The B teams were next up with Didsbury triple winners in the mid 1990’s taking on Ringway. Didsbury were determined to add to the success of their Business Ladies and got off to a cracking start with wins for Laura Thomas, Brenda Chadwick and Jeannie O’Neill.

Liz Brook pulled a point back for Ringway with a 3/2 win over Lin Poole but Didsbury then had victory in their sights as Iris Williams was dormie three in her match with Val Jones. A cool finish on the tricky 16th green saw Iris and Didsbury home. Angela Prior pulled a point back for Ringway against Sandra Moore with a 2up win and Mo McAdoo, with a halved game completed a 4.5-2.5 win for Didsbury to see them to a Cheshire final clash with Royal Liverpool, also at Crewe. |

Tytherington were also in defence of their Plate trophy and
played Prestbury in a real local derby, which went to the wire of extra
holes for the last pairs in play. The teams were locked at 3-3 with Tytherington having wins from Meg Fannon, Mary Staton and Sheila Levell matched by Carol Hulme, Linda Buckley and Monica Bewers for Prestbury. Sheila Earl (Prestbury) and Carolyn Shingles were all square after 18 but an impressive par for Carolyn on the first hole saw her take the point and her team retain the trophy.
