WGTB Cork Challenge Final |

BIRCHWOOD Golf Club provided a great venue for a terrific end
to the WGTB Days Out season which saw the main competitions go right to the
wire. The course survived a horrendous downpour with almost an inch of rain falling in an hour which gave many brave competitors with another real challenge of survival. The late starters missed the bulk of the bad weather to gain an advantage which in the end proved to be crucial. The best round of the day came from Styal’s Bob Mannia and David Williams with a terrific 44 points to take the main prize provided by sponsors Slater Heelis Collier Littler Solicitors.

The key to a good start is the first Tee Shot of the day but
the golfing gods turned the tables on WGTB regular Alan Dunn (Saddleworth)
as his tee shot struck a tree and rebounded back to just 54 yards from where
he started leaving him with the only unwanted prize on the day the Trophy
for the Shortest Drive at the first. The Cork Challenge qualifiers were set an early mark of 41 points by brothers Peter and Mike Burgess from Denton and Houldsworth Golf Clubs. But the scores gradually improved in line with the weather and it was eventually overtaken by Denton’s stalwart duo of Tom Cook and Phil Rudkin with 42 points. Then with virtually the last card of the day the destiny of the main prize of a superb golfing break in South West Ireland courtesy of main sponsor Peter Walsh of Fairway Holidays was decided. Brian Power (North Manchester) and Mike Shaw (Swinton Park) provided the traditional ‘sting in the tail’ as they posted the winning qualifying score of 43 points. |

It was even closer in the battle for the Mike Brennan Trophy
for the best aggregate score over four rounds. Long-time leaders Ray Simcock (Manchester) and Terry Watson (Pike Fold) put in an excellent score of 42 points to increase their aggregate by a vital three points to 165 which kept them one clear of Phil Rudkin and Tom Cook. |

Then Dukinfield’s Martyn Schofield and Philip Morley laid
their challenge with 40 points, which took them level with the top pair. But the rule that in the case of a draw the best last-day score would decide the winners gave the prize to Ray and Terry. They will enjoy a golfing break in Llandudno staying at the super golfer-friendly Esplanade Hotel and keep the Mike Brennan Trophy for the next 12 months. |

Other Day Out prizes went to Tom Cook and Phil Rudkin, Eifon
Howatson and Matthew Williams of Denbigh, 41, Peter and Mike Burgess and Ken
Wardle and Ernie Molloy 40. Nearest the pin prizes were claimed by Alan Simmons (Didsbury) and Gareth Buttery (Upton by Chester) and there were nine ‘Two’s with each one winning seven balls. |
