WGTB Days Out at Disley Sponsored by Dave Orritt

DISLEY Golf Club made a stunning debut on the WGTB Days Out circuit providing a stunning course for the many players making a first appearance there with pristine yet challenging playing conditions, superb views and excellent 19th hole hospitality.

For many players the greens supplied mysteries, which were rarely solved and in the end the old firm of Ray Simcock and Terry Watson from Manchester and Pike Fold had most of the answers with a winning return of 44 points.

There was a logjam of four pairs on 42 points with the cpo going in favour of home duo Chris Swindells and John Paget from Alan Lawrence and Hadge Lowe (Walmersley), Bob Mannia and David Williams (Styal) and Paul Williams and Gilbert Pierce (Hindley Hall) with Geoff Garnett (Didsbury) and Disley President Mike Wright picking up the fifth qualifying slot with 41 points.

The big Welsh contingent failed to finish in the top places as they were often distracted by the flocks of sheep in the adjoining fields to concentrate fully although Gary Morgan got the Nearest the pin on the sixth hole, then missed his putt for Two.

The other nearest the pin in two prize on the 16th saw Jeff Seel (Houldsworth) hole his second shot to save any complicated measuring.

His feat was described by his playing companions as ‘from the tee a hook into the trees on the left of the fairway followed by a thinned second which nearly split the pin in half before going into the hole’.

Eric Waugh (North Manchester) picked up the Shortest Drive Trophy for his 66-yard special on the first tee.

His playing companion Stan Laing won the ‘Longest Drive’ prize for taking over an hour to find the course from his home in Glossop, which can be seen from parts of the Disley course.

The tricky greens restricted the ‘Two’s count to seven balls per player for Ken Wardle (2), Chris Swindells, Andy Bryden, Alan Dunn, Paul Williams. Dave Kenyon and Jeff Seel.
