Ben is a record breaker at Didsbury |
|
|
FORMER Didsbury junior Ben Belfield
had a packed clubhouse rising to applaud him for a full two minutes after
stepping up to receive the Captain’s Day prize from club Captain Derek
Dooley. For Ben, now 22 and a golf scholarship student at Northwood University in Dallas, had set a new course record of 63 off his two handicap for a nett score of 61. Along the way Ben had a severe shank on the seventh hole for a bogey five but pulled it back with some magnificent golf in damp conditions to bag six birdies and an eagle to card his fantastic score for a new amateur course record of 63 which has been held by team star and former Captain Paul Dalby for almost ten years. Ben has just completed his third year at Northwood where he is reading for a degree in Entertainment, Sports and Promotion Management as well as receiving top class coaching and playing for the college golf team.

Ben said: "At my college I have a +1
handicap and play for the team which is ranked in the top ten in the
national league. "I enjoyed being a junior at Didsbury where the club has always been terrific in their support of me as I have kept up my membership while doing my degree course. "I have put in a great deal of hard work on my golf over in Dallas and this record round showed that the hard work has certainly paid off. "When I finish my degree next summer I will consider my future options very carefully but at the moment I have no set idea on what my plans might be, whether in golf or not or where in the world." |
| Alan Simmons of WGTB, who played with Ben during his record round said: "It was a privilege to be witness to some absolutely fantastic golf. "Ben was truly awesome his ball striking and the quality of his game was absolutely superb it is a tribute to the hard work he has put in to achieve such high standards. "To have your name on the board as the winner of Captains Day is one thing but to have broken the course record in the process is something extra special.. |
